One thing is clear to me
I am running a new version of linux (Mandrake 9.2) with no problems on an old laptop (Pentuim II 300mHz, 128mb RAM). Its slow but very useable. I even play WarCraft II and StarCraft on it (only windows games that will run with old video card) plus a ton of new linux games (no OpenGL ones). I have the latest OpenOffice installed, Mozilla, the works. I can tell you that Windows XP won't run on this machine and if it wasn't for linux, it would be useless today. I like the fact that I can upgrade my software without being forced to upgrade hardware. Thats one of Windows' major problems (having to upgrade the whole computer just to upgrade the operating system), along with viruses and instability.

I also have linux installed on my new desktop. Same version, just with a lot more of the bells and whistles turned on (and new 3D games). I can share system files across the laptop and the desktop. Couldn't do that with Windows unless both were close to new (hardware wise). Whats clear to me is that windows is in for a hard fight for the desktops in my house and with others in my family.
