RE: LOL
First, you you claim that Axey is ignorant when you yourself flat out state that you don't even use the product extensively ("Of course, neither do I").

I suggest that you look up "argumentum ad ignorantium." It doesn' mean what you apparently think it does.

Specifically, Don is arguing (as you are) that because you have never been burned by a corrupted MSOffice document, they don't happen.

Then you go on to make a conjecture about the competence of the IT staff in question.

That's "staffs," and the conjecture is Don's stock response when an MS application doesn't work in someone's system: blame the user or admins. I tried to save some time.

My own experience is that both companies' IT staffs are quite competent indeed, and would cite them by name if I were at liberty to do so.

You conclude this by making a blanket statement about how shared documents "routinely" are corrupted but again site neither source nor reference.

Maybe Tsu Dho Nimh will show up on this one and add more details.

Not only is this baseless, you yourself have already stipulated a lack of knowledge!

Not "lack of knowledge," "non-use of the products." I've seen plenty of cases and had to do post-traumatic counseling for others.

It just gets worse from there. Office 2003 (Office 11, the current version) is actually explicitly created for collaboration with the inclusion of OneNote, SharePoint, Project, Publisher, and InfoPath along with a whole bunch of collabrative tools built into the other products such as Live Meeting and enhanced support for tracking changes.

I'm sure that's nice. So are many other products, with much longer track records (e.g. CVS) As the question goes, though, "but will they come when you call them?"

And your point about SharePoint seems contrived. We had a spreadsheet that we were all using as part of a review. We generally had at least two point editing it at any given point and up to 6 people simultaneous editing this one document served up by SharePoint. This was over the course of a month for the project. Not once did we encounter any sort of corruption problem.

I'm sure that the people who thought that they lost work because their documents went divergent will feel much better knowing that it was all imaginary.

Your point might be a bit more valid if you were referring to older versions, but even then Office has had corruption recovery ever since Office 95.

Which makes it all the more remarkable that OpenOffice.org is recommended so often on MSOffice support fora as a file-repair tool for b0rk3n MSOffice files. I know I've done a lot of gratis file repair over the years, but maybe that was also imaginary.

Otherwise, it's just really funny when people accuse others of ignorance

Stephen's Guide might help you avoid future embarassment.
