The dog is drooling ...
Remember Pavlov's dog? A given stimulous would guarantee a predictible response. Its true with some in the Linux crowd and its true with some in the Anti-Linux crowd. Or does that hit too close to home? Personally I think its great that MS is looking at this approach. Those who insist on adfree software will still be able to buy it (or steal it), and those who just want something that does the job will be happy with the adware product. After all, if you use the internet very much you are looking at ads all the time anyway, they might as well be paying for your software. I think a great way they could do this with Windows itself is to turn the desktop background into a dynamic billboard fed from an MS server. Contact with the MS server would be required for the desktop to come up and loss of contact for more than a specified amount of time would cause a shutdown. There could even be a provision for people to make a payment over the internet and receive a custom key to remove the ads for a given period or permanently. Personally I think this is a really great concept with great legs and I hope that MS can make it happen. It sounds like a lot of fun and will open doors for people ot legitimately aquire software who were previously unable to afford that route. Bully for MS!
