This is just history repeating itself. Everyone yelled and screamed when Microsoft shifted to 32 bit.

As far as being able to run 16 bit applications.... you have to draw the line somewhere. There hasn't been a x86 16 bit chip released in 20 years.

Recompiling applications to support 64 bit isn't as simple as recompiling. There are many issues that can come up especially applications that use floating point operations.
