- Good points but...
-
...they do not negate what I was getting at.
What I mean is, if I bought 32bit servers when Itanium was definately Itanic in scope and Opterons were still not being ofered by the big vendors and I now have the need to upgrade my collaboration software then it means a forced hardware update and a forced OS update which will force other app updates....
If however MS kept backward compatibility, there will be no need to upgrade. In otherwords, if MS was more like Linux that can still run on a 386 (and has been ported to 286's and IBM XT boxes) then this forced upgrade would not be neccessary.
That scenario would mean no revenue stream for MS from its "flagship" products.
And on the point of older software available, although Vista isn't out yet and although XPSP2 is not as stable as Win2k and although WinXP does not live well in Win2k AD environments (regarding policy settings), and although Win2k3 is not compatible with a range of softwares (such as SQL2k developer ed), MS no longer sells Win2k thus forcing an upgrade to Win2k3 servers, WinXP and any other version of SQL2k.
Can you say 'revenue stream'? They haven't had much on their flagship products since the introduction of XP (to which many corporations did not migrate) and Win2k3 srv (to which many corporations did not migrate). They had to find ways of forcing upgrades such as reducing the original planned product lifecycle for Win2k from Dec 2006 to Dec 2005 to June 2005 to Dec 2004. Two whole years earlier than planned and still no longhorn, long in the comming.
On point of the re-compiling in Linux, that only went to the point that if Linux/OSS can offer backward/forward compatibillity, then why can't Windows/MS/ISP? In the case of ISP's they are at the mercies of MS. In the case of MS, they are at their own mercy but being merciful does not make money --for them despite it being a cash-cow for OSS. - Posted by: The King's Servant Posted on: 11/15/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
