- But most will still run a flavor of UNIX on Windows
-
Dig into this story and find
"A key reason that RadioShack chose Windows Server System was Windows Services for UNIX 3.5, which gave the company a way to extend the useful life of its UNIX-based POS application.
Windows Services for UNIX provides a UNIX-based subsystem that runs on top of the Windows kernel, enabling UNIX applications and scripts to run natively on Windows alongside Windows-based applications. Windows Services for UNIX includes more than 300 UNIX-based utilities and tools, along with tools that help with migration and support for more than 1,900 UNIX application programming interfaces." Much of that Open Source today.
Back in the day Radio Shack had its own TRS-DOS operating system, a flavor of Unix I recon. Then there were dual boot systems which Microsoft hated because its own OS products benchmarked poorly on these systems (in comparison to the other operating system supported by dual boot.
Today if you run two OS products on the same hardware you are often contractually prohibited from publishing the results of your benchmark studies. This was pointed out by Tunny Act Responders who noted that only the large shops (almost all running flavors of Unix today) could perform the benchmark studies that smaller shops would be willing to pay a fee for disclosure results, this of course benefiting consumers as well as advancing the most appropriate technology.
Washington State is the home state of Cray SuperComputing. You have to recognize that Micorosoft executives live in a massive Ivory Tower not to have benefited from the supercomputing efforts just a few miles from Bills home.
