I don't think there is that much too this anymore. First of all, it isn't really client software that is being built in Java (except for things like Eclipse IDE itself.)

Second of all, everything everywhere is moving to some kind of managed code. Look at .NET and mono. People will someday look at hardware-accessing C programs and think them like strange primitive vaccuum tubes.
