It's about Control
A monopoly has pretty much exclusive control of activity in a commercial area. This is due to past agreements and focus on commerical clients. I can't fault MS for that. No, Microsoft wishes to keep control, which is threatened by increasing market share of other OS.

Mac has always been around, but not as much as Windows. Linux has been on servers and is moving to the desktop. The security, speed and stability (as far as I'm concerned) surpasses Windows. Now they are making inroads on to the desktop (MS's sacred territory), and MS is trying to stop it. The alternative is to lose control, the monopoly and the power.
