It has been a monopoly...
What you are witnessing is history in the making: MicroSoft's monopoly is beginning to show cracks. Therefore, they need the $20 million dollar ad campaign.

Remember: over 90% of the market is Windows on client PCs not because people chose it, but because it was their only practical choice due to the way MicroSoft set up licensing and distribution agreements with VARs.

Now that people are being made aware of a viable choice and MicroSoft faces legal action if they interfere using their clever licensing techniques, they are in panic mode.
