I wan't paying much attention to their marketing campaigns in those days. I'm still not. The joke I remember was one they chose to not advertise:
After M$ bought Hotmail they decided to migrate the server infrastructure away from Solaris and FreeBSD and replace those servers with [a much larger number of] NT boxen. Within a very short time they were anly able to handle about 10% of the traffic coming to the site and had to put the old servers back in place.
Nowadays a switch-over like that would probably go much more smoothly since W2k or W2k3 servers are much more stable, have better data handling capacities and require fewer redundant servers to successfully handle that kind of task. Hardware has improved by an equal if not larger margin as well, so multiple factors would be working in their favor.
