Current marketshare?
Let's see, Longhorn's current share is...?

So all the Windows variants have 99 44/100%, or 105%, or whatever number is comfortable today. But whatever it is, the commercial software, the corporate developments, the stuff running on that OS are thin client - much moreso by the time Longhorn arrives. No problem so far.

BTW, we (the collective we - read CIO, Computerworld, your preference) are unifying, simplifying and cutting the cost of IT support. The idea of moving to a single, rather than dual, support structure is appealing already, though we have only anecdotal tales of organizations preparing to make the move. But when support is pulled for Windows 2000, NT, you name it, where are the corporate users to turn - to the familiar, or to a new system that seems to beg for additional support, that has HTML rendering, media player IN THE CORE? Oh yeah, let's get this one past security.

There was no viable alternative in the past. Period. 100% market penetration should be achieved. But to retain that market, new products should fit with user needs.
