Riddle me this..
How many attachments do you get a day that are "executables?" Not pictures. And not from a virus.

The main attachment that home users get are pictures. Most email programs will view pictures. The ability to automatically execute attachments is unnecessary. Heck, Outlook 2003 blocks many attachments such as links, reg files, etc. that can only be overridden if you are using Exchange. Even Microsoft seems to think it is a bad idea. It even asks me if I want to open zip files with a warning that only known attachments should be opened.
