It should be easier...
...to verify compliance with the GPL than with other licenses when modifying and re-distributing software. To misquote Einstein, the most incomprehensible thing about the GPL is that it is comprehensible. Very comprehensible, in fact. You can read and understand it without a graduate degree in Legalese, unlike most proprietary software licenses.
