You have been wrong before.....
and you are wrong again. That is like MS saying the Internet is just a passing fad (then scrambling to get Windows to access the Internet smoother). This is THE NEXT stage for mobile computing.

Sure, there are a lot of aps that will stay on the desktop. But there are a bunch more that will need to be available from anywhere.

If it is just a passing fad - why would MS be jumping in on it. They have some catchup to do, but they also have some pretty deep pockets and a lot of very good programmers. They will catch up and probaby surpass what is currently being done in the OS arena.
