"Bravery"?
Nothing brave about it. They just want money. They couldn't come up with an "Office Killer" on their own, so they'll try it together.
Probelem is, open standards can cripple an app in an effort to make it workable by all parties involved.

Nothing wrong or evil with a propritary format, it's just a byproduct of software that does something else un-obtainable in another product.
