So should we go to one car model as well? What would it be?
A pinto? A Corvette? With cars, we have accepted that it is necessary to stock differnt parts for each car, have mechanics that specialize in certain models, etc. The cost of providing a variety of cars on the market is stagering, but we generally think the increased inovation and choice are well worth it. Actually, you might argue that the increased competition means that a variety is actually CHEAPER in the end for consumers.Just think how many new models we have comming out every year, vs once every five years for Microsoft.

You see, with Linux, everybody could have their own desktop and set of applications and be compatible. You could have completely different looking desktops, that still used the same drivers and ran the same applications.

You see, with cars, all use the same gasoline and run on the same roads. Yes, you borrow your friends pickup, and the lights and wipers might be in a differnt place, but you can depend on the brakes, gas, and steering wheel. Besides that, 99% of the time, you drive your own car.

Yes, Microsoft has a vested interest in maintaining incompatibilities, but if the Linux model wins, that will be history. With cars, there is no network effect. If company X buys Chevy, and company Y buys Ford, no problem. We look forward to the same state of affairs with operating systems, but won't hold our breath.
