You don't have to fight every battle. Some battles are better not fought
If putting your resources in one area causes you to lose a battle in another area that is more important, what have you gained???

Smart companies pick and chose their battles carefully. With Microsoft, you might say they have so much money many they can afford to compete everywhere, but, there is executive distraction, and you can only hire just so many a-grade employees, (unless you are Google) and you must use them wisely.
