And for every smart company like yours ...
There is probably 20 companies that will just pay the price in order to get the problem fixed. Why?

* In the short term they don't have the resources to address the problem.

* In the short term they don't have the budget in the appropriate cost centers to address the problem. In other words, they have budgeted $50,000 for extra Microsoft help.

* They have too many other problems to deal with than to switch horses in the middle of the race.

* The company may have received other perks from Microsoft to justify any extra fees they might get charged right now. Off the shelf it costs $1000/desktop, but with licensing it's only $500/desktop, and there are 1000 desktops, which means there is $500,000 of benefit that can be tapped into as the cost of doing business.

* The technical mandate of the company might be "all Microsoft" and is budgeted to handle extra fees to "fix" the problem. It is often cheaper to centralize on a single technology platform then to have a mixed bag of technology because it is cheaper in some areas. Remember, staff costs are the most expensive part of the I/T budget.

* Even if Microsoft charges $200/hour, a good quality consultant can charge $100-$150/hour. Microsoft may be more expensive, but if it takes 100 hours to "fix" it only cost $5000-$10000 more than if they got somebody else to do it.
