I hate to burst your bubble
But there is a reason why big companies pay for Microsoft software. Big companies like to be associated with other big companies, just as small companies are afraid of big companies. Look at the partnership agreements in large and small companies. There are more large companies associated/partnered with other large companies then there are small companies associated with large companies. As the article pointed out, Microsoft needs to rely on partnerships with small companies promoting the product, rather than Microsoft trying to direct marketing.

It's all about risk management. A large company like Microsoft, though not perfect, can move a ton of resources to fix a problem where as a small company cannot. Small companies feel intimidated by large companies. It?s not something you can solve overnight, but there are solutions to these problems.

You say OSS is about to take over, and you might be right about that. But SCO is currently throwing a wrench into the plans. I think the SCO argument is full of #@% and is probably a ?pump and dump? scheme, but until it is settled it introduces uncertainty. If SCO was serious about Linux, they wouldn?t create licenses that are more expensive that Microsoft, they?d create them for less in order to grow that part of the business. They are like a $50 million company which is peanuts. Linux is too small to stunt it?s growth like that. Besides, SCO has to some how prove that the GPL is an invalid contract and the arguments they?ve put forward for it is rather shallow.

Linux has lots to offer besides the fact that it is free. Just about every single O/S feature in Linux works better than Windoze; memory management, process management, security, etc. However, there are trillions of dollars invested in Windows and for it to go down quickly (even if it is an Enron as another poster erroneously pointed out) isn?t going to happen.
