Obvious...
"But tell me why isn't every book that's on sale now
available in digital format? It's quite obvious why."

Yup, dead easy - people prefer to read hardcopy books
rather than electronic books. I produce electronic
documents all day long, yet everyone I send them to prints
them out, scribbles on them and gives them back.

Now why do you suppose they do that, when they have a
copy of the digital original to start with? And they have a
word processor with markup tools to do their
modifications? Yet they prefer to print it out, then markup
with a pen or pencil?

If your point was that people would pirate books if they
were provided in digital form, then your point was poorly
made. It also is not supported by facts, since anyone can
photocopy the original into monochrome TIFF and have a
high-quality image of the book in a small digital format,
perfect for electronic copies.

Yet no one does it - why not?
