Wait a minute

Good grief! Novell spins off some companies and lays off employees that will then be hired by the spin-offs, and you guys are all ready to declare Novell's untimely death! They just had some acquisitions; spin-offs are part of the process to prevent bloat, kind of like keeping your source code free of feature creatures. Novell bought companies for specific assets, and they got some they didn't need or want in the process. Now they have to get rid of that extra weight before it pulls them down. And it's not that those extra assets are worthless; it's that companies, like Novell, must retain a clear, simple business plan. Otherwise, the company will become an unwieldy bohemoth, like the federal government for instance--and you don't want that.
