It all looks good on paper, BUT...

1.) MyDoom.A uses an INTERNAL SMTP engine - meaning it sends the e-mail to it's destination directly, without the ISP being involved.

2.) MyDoom.A and other modern virii "spoof" the address where they came from, therefore making it more difficult, if not impossible to trace where it came from.

Say you get a copy of a virus from Fred - so you reply to him and give him the bad news that he's been infected with Virus X. If he's in a pleasant mood, he might reply and tell you that you're only the 50th person to tell him and he's scanned his system and his hardware is clean.

So if we cut old Fred's access off, just because some virus on say, Vladimir's computer, who, btw, is 1/2 way around the world in Outer Mongolia, spoofed Fred's e-mail address when it sent out it's payload - are we really doing the right thing?

I somehow don't think that would fly very far. Too many people would be ROYALLY pissed.

3.) And what would stop someone who got cut off from getting a different ISP? There are only a bazillion or two AOL CD's floating around these days. MSN disc are a bit more scarce, but not impossible to find. Earthlink has booths set up at many retailers...
