Apple sells products. Buy them or don't buy them, but don't
compare this to Microsoft's position in the marketplace.
Different rules apply to a monopolist.

But lets look at this more closely. Apple's reluctance to licence is
seen as a barrier to the competition. Nothing could be further
from the truth. Apple create barriers to entry only if they do
licence, then apply punitive conditions to licencees in the way
Microsoft has in the past (and seem to be trying to again). In not
trying to be all things to all people, Apple effectively welcomes
competition, it welcomes alternate codecs and it competes with
them fairly. Because they happen to be winning doesn't mean
they owe the world a living. It's also fair to say they have the
best package. Only if Apple presumes to channel all content
through it's licence as per the MS thug tactic of leveraging
licencees to behave and conform?only then does a complaint
apply. Your seeing it done properly. It's bound to be unfamiliar.

Your complaint draws into sharp relief the essential differences
between Microsoft advocates and the rest of us. To support
Microsoft is to support the Microsoft paradigm. It has to
dominate to survive. The advocacy doesn't allow for Apple to
succeed in music or Massachusetts to stear off the course. It
doesn't allow for dissobedience of any kind and you find
yourself running from one leak to the next, shoring up the dike.
The fact is, you see Microsoft, the worlds wealthiest tech firm, as
needing rescue almost daily. Ask yourself why you seem to think
they need so much of your help. It's starting to look unseemly.
