"Here we have the gazillionth attempt by Microsoft to shut out everyone and all this ZDNetster can think of is to slam Apple."

You can't see that the one here that is the most closed of them all is Apple? MS' software is used by a huge list of players manufactured by many many different companies, while Apple's is only availbale on players that, uhm, Apple will sell you (well, unless you count the pathetic "iTunes phone").
