MS is learning ...
This is certainly ample evidence that the world of open source is having a huge influence on Microsoft. And the result of this influence is that all in the MS ecosystem are benefiting. I know that there are those in the Linux community that are saying that this is just another MS dirty trick, etc., etc., but I don't think that this is the case at all. MS is, in fact, making these moves from a position of weakness. They are taking these steps in order to survive for the long term. Certainly they face no immediate threat to their profitability, let alone their survival, but companies like MS tend to feret out long term threats, that is why they are able to maintain their position in the marketplace. They finally discovered the internet and are now fighting for their very life with Google and other internet powers. Now they have discovered open source, and they will do what ever they have to to remain competitive, even if that requires that they break some earlier vows. And when Linux does become popular on the desktop, which it eventually will, Microsoft will be there with Linux apps. You can count on it. At this point they have no incentive to port apps to Linux. Doing so would cost them more on the Windows side than what it would gain them on the app side. But the time will come and MS will smell the money. Thats always been something that MS has been good at: Smelling the money!
