Well, Linux had the usb-serial driver built-in. With Windows, it was not
even on the Windows update site. So, here is one case where the advantage goes to Linux.

And, the built in support for serial devices under Linux is great!. This goes back to the days of serial terminals. So, for control application where you still need a lot of serial devices, Linux is great.

Actually, a lot of devices now connect via usb-serial. There are really cheap USB-serial chips. Externally it looks like USB, but internally, it is a serial connection.

You must have a really old GPS if it only has serial support.
