Yes, we need common binaries and installers that work on all distributions.
And, we need a common model for applications to to communicate with the desktop envirnoment that works with Gnome or KDE. It is easy to include both GTK and QT libraries, but programs also interface to KDE and GNOME. These interactions are limited enough that they should be standardized.

That said, it would be good if KDE just went away, or if Troll Tech would finally open up QT. We do not need one group with a toll booth, collecting for the work of all. It should be free to run proprietary applications using the standard widget libraries. I guess the name Troll Tech is fitting. They are the trolls under the bridge trying to collect for the work of all.
