Yes, PHP is not for everthing, J2EE is a better fit for many projects.
I would not use .Net for anything though. Deployment costs are high, and Window is not secure or stable. Yes, if you are careful, you can deploy on Mono so that deployment costs are not too high.

For J2EE, there is JBoss and Geronimo. Both good options, Geronimo was recently certified, JBoss has been certified for a while.

Avoid the lock-in tricks on whatever platform you chose, and you will save tons on deployment.
