Supplementing your research
[Apologies if this shows up twice; I posted it ten minutes ago and it hasn't appeared yet.]

David, I'm extremely impressed with the amount of time and analysis that you've put into this piece - it's the most detailed digging I've seen to date, and you uncovered more than I did in my own research and interviews in writing Massachusetts and OpenDocument: A Brave New World?. I did, however, talk to each of the people that you talked to in this piece while the events were transpiring (as well as others involved), and I can supply some additional information, including the following:

- my interviews occurred on and between September 20 and 26, and included Alan Yates (MS), Eduardo Gutentag and Michael Brauer(both Sun), Peter Quinn (MA), Patrick Gannon, Mary McCrae and Carol Geyer (all OASIS),and Jonathan Zuck and Morgan Reed of the Association for Competitive Technology, among others.

- One question that I asked everyone that I talked to was whether Microsoft should be surprised if Massachusetts rejected the MS XML Reference Schema. With the exception of Alan Yates, everyone (including Zuckerman and Reed, who opposed the Massachusetts decision) said that Microsoft should not be surprised, based on everything they knew.

- Peter Quinn (who I intereviewed the day before the formal announcement) said that no real change should be anticipated.

- I knew that the Sun negative pledge was in the works, but was not able to disclose that when I issued my own story.

I'll add additional details at my blog: The Standards Blog tonight on the above and the Sun negative plege. I will also give your very long and thorough entry a more careful read tomorrow and add further detail at my blog from my research and interviews to supplement your good work.

Well done!
