It's definitely a bigger threat to MS SQL.
Microsoft wants you to start off with Access and transition to
SQL Server when you grow up. Free databases are a threat for
two reasons. First, you get much better performance and
stability with MySQL, PostgreSQL or Firebird. Second, both
Microsoft products only run on Windows, which has high
licensing costs and performance, reliability and security
problems of its own. MySQL, PostgreSQL and Firebird all run on
Windows too, if that's what you're hooked on, but they also run
on Linux, Mac OS X, and almost any Unix. If you can't find a
binary for your OS, you can download the source and compile
one.

This is obviously a problem for Microsoft. If you build a business
with one of these databases on Unix, Linux or Mac OS X, guess
which product you won't be able to use when you decide to
transition to a commercial database. But can you switch to
Oracle? No problemo.
