Free databases are a huge benefit to commercial vendors
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of small startups using
MySQL and PostgreSQL that simply wouldn't be operating if they
had to license one of the commercial database products or write
their own. Eventually the more successful ones will switch over to
Oracle or one of the other commercial databases. Without free
databases, these companies would never get off the ground, so
they are a huge benefit to database vendors and to innovation in
general.
