Maybe they just wanted Linux DB programmers
I doubt that. The client library I bind to is mysql's client lib. Not InnoDB and not BerkerleyDB. I wouldn't notice if the table handler changed from one PC to another, so I *can't* see how customers have some affinity to InnoDB. Also if that was Oracle's intention, then why not buy MySQL?

I also don't subscribe to the 'Oracle bought Inno to kill MySQL' because it makes no sense. I see a few people spreading the usual GPL FUD, but the substance of that wouldn't stand up in court. Since only the client bindings need to be under a commercial license for commercial customers, you would only need to change the commercial license (making that library commercial and the rest GPL), or Fork InnoDB into a self contained GPL'd module.

Perhaps they just wanted the programmers, I mean they get a working team capable of writing a well respected Linux database table engine, and Oracles DB is old now, has probably been bashed around a bit and needs a fresh set of eyes. Also they want to expand their Linux operation and these guys know Linux. Perhaps everyone is looking for conspiracies or great business strategies when its just a simple deal to get a good team of programmers.
