Not so, Fork Away!
Thats sounds like the same FUD Inno is spreading. I'm aware InnoDB wish it was so, however they did license InnoDB under GPL.

The Inno FUD is as follows:

"If you want to use MySQL+InnoDB under a COMMERCIAL license, you have to buy the license from MySQL AB. The product containing both MySQL and InnoDB is called MySQL Pro. 'MySQL Classic' does not contain InnoDB... The GNU GPL license, under which both MySQL and InnoDB are published, does not allow, without a permission from MySQL AB and Innobase Oy, LINKING of InnoDB and MySQL, or the client libraries of MySQL, to a product which you distribute but which does not itself satisfy the GNU GPL license." - InnoDB

This is true, you cannot LINK to InnoDB without either being a GPL program or buying a commercial license, however you can late load it as a module in either a commercial product or link direct to it if your softward is also under GPL. InnoDB can do squat about either of those.

MySQL can continue to use InnoDB as a late loaded GPL module just like every other GPL module they use under linux and GNU.

Thats the beauty of the GPL, it protects you from vendors. If Oracle bought it thinking it would kill MySQl they are seriously kidding themselves.

Fork away!
