There have been success stories
This is not a techie program. Not at all. An uncle of mine had trouble with his computer. For some reason XP started acting up, rendering Office almost useless and he had to re-install the whole beast. However upon re-installation (with all and format C: ), the Office problem did not get corrected for some reason. He only has one license for MS-Office 2000 Professional which ran for about 600 USD... Nothing you could call cheap.

Anyway, so he called me up and I investigated the issue... I removed Office completely from the system and attempted a re-install. Nothing. Still problems (characterized by application crash as soon as the cursor is moved). So I explained to him that there was another free (as in beer for him) alternative: OOo. I had OOo 1.1.4 on my USB drive for Windows, but did not offer it to him until I saw how serious the problem was with MS-Office.

We're talking about a 60 year old chap... You know elderly people aren't easily convinced that there are alternatives to what they're used to use and know. I showed him OOo gave him a little tutorial on-site and sure enough he's been productive ever since... five months later.

Sure enough we're talking about different necesities for different people, but truth be told, not everyone needs Office Pro, nor SOHO versions of Office either.
