IM Interoperability
Now that advertising dollars are returning to the net, the content of IM becomes less important* than who can build the client that generates the most advertising revenue - and that is the tight line between adding features that attract users, selling eye time and avoiding upsetting users with the clutter.

Roughly the equivalent of deciding whoose portable MP3 player and download service do I use when the song sounds the same on all of them.

* except I suspect ALL the services want to feed IM content into their search engines to generate more targeted ads.
