These people are comparing the products and format, not just the format

To understand the two formats, you need to look at the way each file type stores information using xml, and compare them one-by-one. You will find since they both use xml, there is probably not much difference. And, if Microsoft is so worried about it, they are more than welcome to help advance the Open Document standard. But, the best way to advance the standard is to open it up and let all of the best and the brightest in the world contribute. There will be follow on versions of Open Document to improve efficiency, and also to include new types of formatting and data.

And, as more governments and large corporations standardize on the Open Document format, there will be more and more options for saving in that format. Word Perfect, Smart Suite, KOffice, OpenOffice, StarOffice, . . . .

Seems like this will make for a lot more choice.

And, do NOT forget. Massachusettes made a choice. They weighed the different formats and office suites and chose to standardize on the Open Document format. Governments do have to make choices, you just did not like the choice.
