Train is picking up steam!
Well, document format standardization is certainly the movement du jour. Any productivity suite worth its salt will soon come with ODF support in some form. Even that great behemoth in the northwest will succumb to the will of the people. Can this format be coopted? No. Can it be bought? No. The only way to prevent its imminent success is to take every CIO to lunch at the best restaurant in Redmond on Bill's tab. I'm afraid that's just not feasible. Mike and his rep are just too busy these days with their Vista endeavors.

Seriously, this is great news for consumers. Hopefully we will soon be able to know that we can use one suite at work and another (free one...take a guess which) at home, and have no problem with document exchange and interoperability. Not only that, but docs can be readable through a text editor, rather than seeing just garbage characters. This will prevent data loss and help make it possible to disseminate docs more widely, and is long overdue.

I bet they'll do it anyway, but how about an "ODF compliant" seal on office suites...so we can know at a glance that its *fully* compliant. This train is now leaving the station and I can't wait for it to get to full speed!
