Java User, rejoice! This is my last post to you.
Sorry, you missed the point then. The point was, you can prototype, demo, and test most proprietary software just as easily as any OSS. The one time where you MAY have restrictions on deployment are products which are in beta.
So then you agree that to actually use software in a production environment, you either need a license or an OSS/FOSS product? I thought I got your point quite clearly the first (very first) time. you haven't old me anything new these nauseating times.

Prototype, Demo, test. I got it.

Use in a production environment. Get it?
Borland is not a MS product.
Duh! "Borland" is not even a product! It is a software publishe..... Nevermind! You obviously missed the point where I was contrasting different EULA's of different publishers in the proprietary space so that you could se.... Nevermind!
If you want to compare the licenses for Fedora Core and Gentoo....
But suppose I wanted to compare RHEL with Fedora Core or Gentoo's free product with their hardened, suported product? Different, eh? Like the Novel SuSE Ent License and the OpenSuSE lcense, eh? Nevermind! Oh, and have you read the part of the GPL whe it explains how to use GPL code in proprietary software without having your own code released under the GPL license so as to prote.... Nevermind!
>>Then there is the MS Corporate VLA. All MS licenses. Where is the choice? <<

The point is MS doesn't force you to just use ONE type of license. They have licenses that fit your needs. And of course they're all MS, MS is selling the product!
Instead of pointing you to a generic MSN sarch for the term, "define: independent," I thought I would send you to a dictionary. You do know what a dictionary is, don't you? It is what people who kow what Google is for use when they want a definition.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=indendent
That's exactly correct. The point is that OSS, even FOSS, has some strings attached unless if it is offered under some license that explicitly voids and waives all ownership and prior rights claims.
Like MS software, right? Oh, you mean like what the GPL and LGPL does under the right circomstaces. I would however love to see MS explicitly void and waive any ownership or prior rights claim. You see, what the GPL does is to allow the end-us.... Nevermind!
Generally, this means that the product is controlled by one party. Java, for example, is proprietary because Sun has the final say. Linux, to my knowledge, even if you disagree with Torvalds, you can take the source and modify the kernel to your heart's desire and still call it Linux. You can also distribute as much as you want (pursuant to GPL, of course). You cannot do this for Java, Ingres, or any products in the MS shared source program.
So you are saying that no one controls any OSS software? Then wh can't you publish it freely? Why do you have to obey the license agreement? What are you agreeing to? Do I not agree to the Sn License when I design a Java App and publish it? What do I lose using GNU C++ that I gain using MS C++? (Software editors). What do I lose using OpenOffice.org that I gain using MS Office2k3? (End-user app). What do I gain using MS IIS with .Net that I lose using Apache with PHP? (Middleware).

If you can eplain this to me so that we ca.... Nevermind!
Basic scenario: So did someone else write code to do transaction foo? Does your company want to use that existing code to create your own proprietary solution to sell? If foo is proprietary, you can negotiate with that company for the full rights to use their source in your product. You absolutely have NO RIGHTS to do that if foo is licensed under GPL.
I guess tat answers the question. You have not read the GPL. In fact, Yyou absolutely have ALL RIGHTS to do that if foo is licensed under GPL. The GP protects contributors. Read it.

Learn something.
