Opensource is a great idealology. However, Idealologies aren't always a practicallity.
I am sure if some start contributing ideals and show how to implement them on the old engine, Nessus will consider either implementing them in the new design or opening up the source again.
An opensource project is as only as good as its contributors. If you don't have any, then your product won't be as good.
