In my experiences...
"First - the perception of to restrictive a license needs to be overcome. Yes the Microsoft license is far more restrictive than any of the Open Source licenses for using systems."

This isn't too much of an issue since you run into these problems with Solaris, Unix Variants like AIX etc..

"Second - the perception that Microsoft cannot play fairly with others. To this day Microsoft is seen as a bully and is not trusted. Until Microsoft can get that to change, i.e. that means they need to change, this will be another barrier they need to overcome."

In all my time where I've worked with companies using AIX or Solaris or Linux as their back-ends this was the furthest from their minds. Of the CIO's I've worked with, Apache and the speed and ease of command line was what made them go to these.

"Third - the perception that Microsoft OS's are bloated and non-scalable. Which when compared to any of the Unix's especially the Linux variants, that perception is reallity."

This is most deffinitly been the problem in my own experiences with the very "large" companies. When you compare Unix vs. Windows for speed. Unix wins hands down because it's not reliant on graphics and point and click. Sometimes command line is just faster than point and click.

"Fourth - the per CPU cost... this needs to be lower in order to compete with Linux."

Ever see the cost of PER CPU cost for Solaris or Unix variants?

"
Fifth - Not many really believe Microsoft will adhere to the set standards for long before they implement their own "standard" that breaks other systems compatibility, so why risk it?"

If their main software back-end required MS I think most would move to it. Problem is the scalability of the Unix variant applications that Windows does not have.

"The bottom line is Microsoft can try to break into this market, but this is most assuradly Linux's realm and it definitely dominates here."

All unix admins I've worked with.. Their thing is.. bloat... MS vs Unix.. They love Unix for the simple reason that with a simple sentence they can accomplish alot more than they could with Windows having to point and click, set flags in other screens rather than just using a command line interface to get the same result in less time. Just less graphical.

Just my experiences up to this point working with the Unix environment.
