Sun's hardware is cheap... Now...
Nothing wrong with a huge cluster of white-box Linux systems happy. However, at the time, that made the most sense for Google. Now, however, Sun's x64 systems are so incredibly cheap it would almost cost more to build them yourself. I just bought a Sun Fire X2100 from Sun for $745. I didn't buy because I'm a Sun fan per say. I was just shopping for the cheapest Opteron server I could find. Sun's new x64 server line is untouched by HP, Dell, IBM, and others I looked at.

Google may choose to continue building thousands of their own white-box systems, but with the prices coming out of Sun, they'd be better off clustering thousands of cheap Sun Opteron servers.

Who knows?
