Google uses Linux and cheap white boxes
Sun's software (Java, OpenOffice, Glassfish, etc) as well as their hardware.

On the hardware front, not really. If you poke around Google you'll find that they do their searching with clusters of a large numbers of cheap white boxes (running Linux). Google has mastered (or maybe that's PhDed :^) the art of taking full advantage of Linux clusters.
