M$'s attempt to further proprietize Office is already doomed to failure.
M$'s attempt to further proprietize Office is
already doomed to failure.

Adoption of open alternatives will sweep M$
from the bulk of locations, over time. Not all,
just most, 'cuz - among other things -
heavy-duty corporate executives have pleaded
with M$ for years (YEARS!) to develop an
"Office-Lite," obviously to DEAF EARS, eh?

AND, agreed 150%, Office97 *IS* a perennial
workhorse!

Yeah, Office2K, etc. have more bells, whistles,
yada, yada, but for complex docs, ad hoc
tables, mailmerges, presentations, spreads,
blah blah, O97 still does the job 99.9% of the
time and now there's... OOo, which does the
usual 99.9% job also.

The collab features of current and future Office
versions are not nearly compelling enough to
mortgage out future with M$.

Proprietary XML will BURY M$Office.

The computer community will reroute around
DAMAGE like M$ stupid pet tricks, and leave it
behind.

The end of M$'s hegemony is clearly within
sight, not because there're lots of
"Greed-is-Good-fellas" running commercial
Linux outfits, but because Linux offers a
genuinely better value prop.

There it is.

And, yep! I'll keep my legit copies of Office97,
2K and a few XP's around just for the
occasional pesky compatibility issue, but
Open Offices, however they evolve, are the
future.
