Patend Technology Not Data Formats
Another off the mark move by MS wholy in line with its long proven 'strategies'. Who could expect MS to change personality and maje it decently easy for competitors to offer s/w that manipulates the data contents in a file.

The right approach is to keep the data format open and portable and compete on the basis of the MERITS of the s/w that uses this data.

But as it is always the case, you cannot abuse for ever the system and always get away with it. Now that people have tasted the freedom from proprietary solutions and seen with their own eyes the advantages of sharing open formats, will think twice before storing their critical data in a way that largely excdludes the use of s/w from the MS competitors.

Good job MS: you've just proven that old habbits never die and that old dogs cannot learn new tricks.
