Remember Office 97?
I remember when MS brought out Office 97, with all new formats so older versions of Office couldn't open them. It p*ssed off a lot of companies that had perfectly good copies of Office installed.

By 1999 most large companies had spent untold thousands of dollars to upgrade just because of the format change. And many of them are still using Office 97 because there really hasn't been any changes to the suite that the average business user cares about.

This may be MS way of trying to do the same thing again. But this is a different world than it was in 1997. MS is losing the data center and Linux is making slow but steady process on the desktop in some sectors.

My company has all the MS Office we need (O97 & O2K). If MS changes formats again, we'll do what we did from 1997 - 1999. Return the files to the sender and tell them to save it as something we can use.

With any luck, the new files will have a different file extension from the standard doc, xls, ppt and we can block it at the firewall like a virus.
