Older browsers ... The whole point of web design today is INCLUSION, which CSS and XHTML does....ECMAScript-based technologies do NOT!

There are just as many cross-browser issues related to CSS and XHTML than to AJAX.

Why would I want by mobile browser to download all this scripting just to get a text message about my next appointment???

No, you wouldn't need AJAX for that. No one is claiming that's what it's for.

AJAX is just bad because of its dependency on a client-side technology ... Really there is NO REASON to EVER use this technology with Flash.

Well, Flash is client-side technology, too, so there goes that line of argument.
