XAML may be the replacement
I've said for a while that XAML is going to devalue the web browser, because it brings the advantages of rich clients--good response time, ease of development, but uses web-style deployment and security, and it integrates well with HTML content, inside a browser. It's fully capable of running right on the desktop, too, no browser needed. MS is also making it so it integrates well with .Net, so the code logic behind the XAML UI can be written in a .Net language, rather than Javascript.
