Something more lightweight
Well, there's always J2ME if you're concerned about the "weight" of the JVM, plus Java is capable of dynamic interfaces through dynamic class loading and JavaBeans. Or you can even display HTML inside a Java application if you really wanted. There's plenty of possibilities for remote interfaces through Java.
