AJAX Rocks
It's really not that new but the application of the technique is novel and the apps that are coming out have a lot of potential. Still a little rough right now, but give them a little more time.

Here's a good example: www.writely.com

One interface and you can write a letter, blog or publish the document and pick who you want to make it available for sharing. Just add email, IM and text messaging and you'd have a very nifty little app. It works very much like a desktop application. And these are just in their infancy. The potential is astounding, particularly if the apps are written to accept plugin functionality.

I do see apps like this making a dent in MSFT's kingdom, even though there's an AJAX.NET framework already out there. Couple more steps need to happen. These apps need to run stand-alone as well as they run connected and they need to support open formats (some of them already do that).

But I can compose a document anywhere and it doesn't matter which browser or OS I'm using. Windows, Mac, Linux or BeOS it all looks and works exactly the same. Desktop, laptop, server or appliance, no difference. No emailing docs back and forth and getting the versions mixed up. It's a huge step forward in web applications.
