All of this just proves as hard as you try, The world and business is dictated by profitability. Thats reality folks, and the only way companies can make more money is to differentiate their product from other competitors. Make their product the standard and control the market.

Sounds like Microsoft, but dont fool yourself. Red hat, IBM, Oracle, BEA whatever the company they want that control.

United Linux was the right direction, but in the end many surviving Linux companies will look for ways to differentiate their product to make it unique to that brand.
